Product FAQs
Q.How do tier-on-tier shutters differ from full-height with a mid-rail?
A.While both allow independent control of the top and bottom louvres, the key difference is that tier-on-tier shutters have completely separate panel sets. This means you can physically fold back the top panels to the wall while leaving the bottom panels closed—essentially turning them into café style shutters whenever you like. Full-height shutters with a mid-rail are a single tall panel where only the louvres move independently. Tier-on-tier offers the maximum possible flexibility.
Q.Are tier-on-tier shutters suitable for all windows?
A.They are best suited to taller, narrower windows, particularly traditional Victorian or Edwardian sash windows. Because there are four panels (two top, two bottom) instead of two, they can look a bit 'busy' on very wide or short windows. They also require a bit more depth in the window recess to allow the panels to fold back cleanly. During our survey in towns like Ashbourne or Buxton, we'll check your window's dimensions to ensure this style will function perfectly.
Q.Do they provide good blackout for bedrooms?
A.Tier-on-tier shutters provide excellent light reduction, similar to our other shutter styles. While no shutter is 100% blackout due to the small gaps needed for the louvres to move, they are significantly better than most blinds or curtains. If you are a very light sleeper, we can discuss pairing them with an integrated honeycomb blind for a total blackout solution.
