Product FAQs
Q.What is a mid-rail and do I need one?
A.A mid-rail is a horizontal bar that divides the shutter panel into two sections. It's not just a structural element for taller windows; it allows you to operate the louvres in the top and bottom sections independently. This is incredibly useful for street-level rooms where you might want the bottom slats closed for total privacy while keeping the top ones open to flood the room with natural light. We usually recommend a mid-rail for windows over 1800mm in height to ensure the structural integrity of the panel.
Q.Are full-height shutters better for insulation?
A.Yes, full-height shutters are among the best window treatments for thermal efficiency. Because they cover the entire window and sit within a custom-built frame, they create a pocket of air between the glass and the shutter panels. This 'dead air' space acts as a powerful insulator, significantly reducing heat loss in the winter and reflecting solar heat in the summer. Many of our Derbyshire customers in older stone properties find they notice a significant reduction in draughts and a more consistent room temperature after installation.
Q.Can I still open my windows with full-height shutters installed?
A.Absolutely. Our shutters are designed to be as practical as they are beautiful. The shutter panels are hinged within their own frame, allowing them to swing open 180 degrees (depending on your wall depth and obstructions) to give you full access to your windows for cleaning or maximum ventilation. For daily use, most people simply tilt the louvres to control light and air, but the ability to fully open the panels is always there.
